MAUGARS (A.). Misfortunes, faults and repentance... - Lot 252 - Ader
MAUGARS (A.). Misfortunes, faults and repentance of Pierrot. By A. Maugars. Work decorated with 16 engravings, drawn by M. Platel. A. Maugars, publisher. Paris. [1852]. In-16 oblong (10,7 x 15 cm). (16) leaves printed in recto, 16 engraved plates : half dark green basane, spine decorated with gilt fillets, bearing the title "Contes". (Binding of the time). Unique edition. One of the works that Alphonse Maugars wrote, edited and lithographed the plates. Born in 1804, he was patented bookseller in 1842 and lithographer in 1847. His interesting production as a publisher began in 1844 at 32 rue Sainte-Croix-de-la-Bretonnerie, then at 30 from 1851. Father of five children, he signed himself several works, the most amusing of which are these misadventures of a Pierrot-"Struwwelpeter" illustrated with sixteen lithographs. Each of them contains four letters of the alphabet in a frame, including the double vowels Æ, Œ, Ç and, rare in the 19th century, W. The book is printed on one side, a large typeface used for the first reading manuals for young children. Two of the sixteen plates are watercolored, by a meticulous child. Minimal traces of gummed coloring. Binding cuts and corners restored.
