MÉRICANT (Louis). Teaching the blind. Braille alphabet. With the methods put to the use of the Sighted. In indestructible relief. To teach the Blind to read and write. Louis Méricant. Professor of tower at the Institute of the Blind of Toulouse. Honored with a subscription from the Minister of Public Instruction. Delegate to the Congress held in Paris in 1878, for the improvement of the lot of the Blind. Member of the French Association for the Advancement of Science. [Followed by titles and advertisements]. Toulouse. [Circa 1885]. (22,7 x 15,2 cm). Strong cardboard covers with title pages printed on both applied boards, first reverse of black chagrined paper, second with a notice in cursive writing about Monsieur Méricant and the use of his hardwood relief plate. Black plate, with alphabet, accented letters, punctuation and numbers and their correspondences in raised braille writing, placed in the center of the covers. Unusual plate of alphabets in Latin letters and Braille, in relief, made of hardened wood, according to the author, but which seems to be made of composite material. Louis Méricant, born in 1830 in Toulouse, was an ivory carver and the material used is ebonite, similar to the color of ebony, "ebony style" as quoted in his description. He was a teacher at the professional workshops of the Institute for the Blind in his city. This work was produced in small numbers and is available from the author at his home in Toulouse. For the first notions to the blind and for clairvoyants who wish to learn this method of reading and writing. Alphabet with the letters placed in horizontal rows underlined by the Braille writing. A hole at the top of the board allows it to be hung. Covers and board very well preserved.
