A rare Moveï mask, signifying death, or more certainly a gor - Lot 225
A rare Moveï mask, signifying death, or more certainly a gorilla mask. This ancient mask, despite its white polychromy of imported paint, bears witness to a very oxidized wood inside, and to obvious and numerous uses. Reminiscent of the shape of a gorilla skull, this mask is part of the pantheon of numerous anthropomorphic and zoomorphic masks that the Mitsgoho sculpted for the rituals of bwiti, ya-mwei and especially the kono that they still kept until recently. Note here the subtle flattening at the front of the skull reminiscent of the rare gorilla masks of the kwele.
