Bowl with molded decoration, Seljuk Iran, late 12th - early - Lot 170
Bowl with molded decoration, Seljuk Iran, late 12th - early 13th century Hemispherical bowl with flared lip on a small cylindrical foot, in glazed siliceous ceramic with molded decoration of a frieze of inscriptions in floriated Arabic kufic script beneath braced arcatures. Height: 11 cm; diameter: 14.3 cm Broken-glued, restorations, small chips, iridescence. This bowl belongs to a group of ceramics made of fine siliceous paste with calligraphic decoration molded in slight relief under a monochrome or transparent glaze. The inscriptions, generally in Arabic although the pieces were produced on Iranian soil, are often greetings in kufic calligraphy. This is the case of a bowl in the Khalili Collection in London (POT 98) and an octagonal bowl signed Hassan al-Kashani in the Musée du Louvre (MAO 2016/1). The translucency of the paste, due to its thinness, is often reinforced by a reperced decoration of the wall on which the molded inscription stands out. This is the case on the two pieces cited for comparison. A Seljuk Bowl with Moulded Decoration, Iran, late 12th - early 13th century Philippe Magloire Collection - Lots 132 to 207
