Bowl decorated with a winged horse, Iran, Kashan, late 12th - Lot 173
Bowl decorated with a winged horse, Iran, Kashan, late 12th - 14th century Hemispherical bowl on a small circular foot in siliceous ceramic with black painted decoration on a white background under a transparent glaze of a winged horse in front of foliage branches. Inscription "304 N" under the foot. Diameter: 20.3 cm Cracks, reglued breaks, edge chips. A similar bowl decorated with another winged creature is in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (EA1978.2260), while the winged horse is found on a bowl decorated with a metallic chandelier in the Metropolitan Museum, New York (16.87). In medieval Iran, this iconography was probably less influenced by the Pegasus of Greek mythology than by the constellation Faras al-'Azam, depicted in copies of al-Qazwini's The Wonders of Creation. A Bowl decorated with a Winged Horse, Iran, Kashan, late 12th century Philippe Magloire Collection - Lots 132 to 207
