Three dishes with blue and white decoration, Safavid Iran, l - Lot 203
Three dishes with blue and white decoration, Safavid Iran, late 17th - early 18th century and circa 1900
Hollow dishes on circular bases, the first two with flared lips, in siliceous ceramic painted in cobalt blue under a transparent glaze, the first two with a radiating decoration of floral stems around a central medallion, one decorated with meanders, the second with scrolling foliage, the third with a decoration of pagodas in landscapes.
Diameter: 22 , 21.1 and 19.5 cm
Reglued breaks, restorations and small chips on the first two, a chip on the third.
The two dishes with radiating floral decoration are based on a Chinese prototype of porcelain with "aster" decoration, possibly depicting stylized chrysanthemums, produced mainly for export. Numerous Safavid pieces with this decoration were found in British excavations at the Qandahar site in Afghanistan in the mid-1970s. The Victoria and Albert Museum in London owns several examples of this series, such as dish 1418-1876. As for the "gombad" pagoda decoration, it derives from the "Willow pattern" printed on English ceramics from the late 18th century onwards, itself inspired by motifs painted on Chinese porcelain in the late 17th and 18th centuries.
