Qur'an, Iran qâjâr, 19th century
Manuscript on paper, seventeen lines per page in naskhi Arabic in black ink, some signs and characters in red ink, some marginal inscriptions. The manuscript introduces the table of contents in the form of a checkerboard pattern illuminated in gold and polychrome, the next double-page showing two poly-lobed mandorles with appendages inscribed in red ink on a gold background of prayers. The Qur'anic text is then introduced by a double-frontispiece in unwâns illuminated in gold and polychrome, with the sura titles in red in gilded cartouches surmounted by poly-lobed lambrequins. In the text, several illuminations: sura titles inscribed in red on a gold background, verses separated by golden discs, and several marginal medallions marking the divisions of the text. The manuscript ends with a prayer following the last sura. Hardback binding with painted and lacquered decoration of a floral composition of roses and eglantines on the boards, and stems of narcissus on the back covers.
