Composite poetic manuscript, Kashmir, 18th-19th century Composite manuscript on paper with approximately sixteen lines of text per page, in Persian Urdu nasta'liq in black ink, a few terms in red ink, mainly divided into four columns, three columns at the end, the lines oblique on some sections. The text is inscribed on a gold-powdered background on several pages, in reserve on a gold background on others, or embellished with illuminated plant motifs on still other pages. At the head of the manuscript, a frontispiece, probably foreign to the manuscript, in sarlow, richly illuminated in gold and polychrome, and adorned with a finial richly decorated with floral scrolls. This is followed by a foreword at the head of which appears the name of Mirza Mahdi Khan, first secretary to King Nader Shah, and then three pages of checkerboard index with boxes inscribed in red. A few small illuminated title cartouches in the gold-powdered section. Text illustrated with eight gouache and gold paintings. The text includes much of the Mathnawi of Muhammad Akram al-Multani al-Hindi, who died in 1100. Modern brown leather binding.
