Jalal al-Din Rumî (d. 1273), Mathnawi-l Manawi, Iran qâjâr, 19th century
Manuscript on paper in six sections of twenty-seven lines of text in Persian nasta'liq and Arabic naskhi in black ink, section titles in red ink, Persian text in four columns. Manuscript richly illuminated in gold and polychrome. The first two introductory pages in Arabic with gilded floral margins, followed by a double-frontispiece in unwâns with gold and polychrome. Then, each section introduced by an illuminated sarlow frontispiece, mostly in the form of a cartouche surmounted by a flamed mantling trimmed with gilded scrolls. At the end of the manuscript, date 1257 H/1841 probably added by another hand. Small handwritten notes in Ottoman added later at the head of the manuscript. Ottoman flap binding in garnet leather with embossed decoration of a central mandorla and four poly-lobed spandrels embossed with floral scrolls and highlighted in gold.
