Two poetic calligraphies and a calligraphic exercise siyah mashq, Iran, 19th century
Calligraphies on paper in Persian nasta'liq in black ink in cloud reserves on a gold background. Mounted in album pages on card with gilded or polychrome borders, some with floral decoration.
A quatrain by Anvari (1126-1189) signed Muhammad al-Bahani and dated 1294 H /1876. Illuminated composition in both golds, of four oblique lines in gold-powdered cloud reserves on a gold background furnished with floral scrolls. The last verse is followed by the signature of calligrapher Muhammad al-Bahani and the date 1294 H/1876 in smaller characters. The quatrain is number 377 of the Anvari Diwan's Roba'iyat; calligraphic verses by Sa'adi (c. 1210-1291/92) inscribed in two columns of ten oblique lines of text in nasta'liq shekasteh, the number 4 inscribed in the upper part of the thin separating column. The text is taken from Sa'adi's Sermons; a calligraphic exercise in siyah mashq, several multidirectional lines of text in nast'aliq shekasteh.
Calligraphy size: 15.2 x 7.8 cm, 9.7 x 4 cm, 11.6 x 5.5 cm; total size: 30.1 x 20.6 cm, 24.4 x 15.6 cm, 31.2 x 19.8 cm
The first in good condition, slight lifting and chipping, tiny stains on the second, wear and foxing on the third.
