Three religious calligraphies in Arabic, 19th century Calligraphies on paper in Arabic with black ink in cloud-like reserves on a gold background sprinkled with polychrome flowers on the first two. Mounted in album pages on cardboard with gold-painted or polychrome borders. A bilingual Koran folio, Eastern Iran or Kashmir, manuscript of eight lines of text in naskhi calligraphy, the interlinear translation in Persian nasta'liq in red ink. Verses separated by rosettes illuminated in gold and polychrome. Qur'an II, 9-16; calligraphed Hadith extracts, Iran, eight lines of text in naskhi calligraphy, the last line giving the name of the calligrapher Muhammad 'Ali al-Isfahani and the date Muharram 1290 AH/February 1873; a Qur'anic text, Near East or Iran, eleven lines of text in Arabic in muhaqqaq calligraphy. Inscription by another hand added to the lower part giving the date of Jumada al-Oula dated 1245 H/October 1829. Qur'an, II, 255-257. Calligraphy size: 14.5 x 13 cm, 16.9 x 11 cm, 28.1 x 18.5 cm (when viewed); total size: 31.5 x 20.7 cm, 31 x 20 cm Minor wear, stains and accidents, third calligraphy glazed over. Muhammad al-Isfahani, whose name appears on the second calligraphy, was a calligrapher specializing in naskhi during the reign of Nasser edl-Din Shah Qâjâr (r. 1848-96), who granted him the title of "Sultan al-Kuttab".
