Honoré-Gabriel de Riquetti, count of MIRABEAU (1749-1791). L.A., Tuesday [early 1784], to a friend; 2 pages in-8.

He is preparing to leave for England. He forwards to his friend a letter from Henriette (his mistress Henriette-Amélie de NEHRA): "she suggests the only reasonable course of action I have left to take; and M. de Meulan writes to me at the same time in the name of a power, that is his word, that I can come to Paris in safety; so that I will show up there only for my business and will not stay there. My mind is made up, therefore, unless you give me better advice; find some way to put the civil affair to rest or to finish it in such a way that my guarantors will be at rest; [...] give me eight or ten louis for my journey and I will embark, without saying a word to London for fear of good advice and that a plot will be hatched before my arrival there. I will leave my effects and books here until further notice. As soon as I arrive in Paris, the remains of the arrears, except for 25 louis to go to Provence, will be religiously sent to you [...] The little girl is right, that is the only noble, honest and safe thing to do. You know very well, my friend, that if you are going to make a decision, you should make it as soon as possible, lest the little girl meet me on the way and we make the false expense of a double journey. [It is true that I am without the ground, but you see that no scruples of this kind can stop my departure". He adds: "It is also necessary for you to understand well the letter of Henriette to know that the castle of Mirabeau and its furniture &c are mine by contract of marriage, and that I alone have the right to establish residence there".
