He has just learned of the death of Abbé Arnaud [academician François Arnaud (1721-1784), died December 2]: "I think he must have pensions and those depending on Mr de Vergennes. Would it not be appropriate to offer this opportunity to the goodwill of Mr. Garde des Sceaux [Miromesnil]. If you think so, would you be so kind as to write him a note to warn him of this death and of the opportunity to exercise his benevolence"...
