Théophile ROUSSEL (1816-1903) physician, philanthropist and - Lot 392
Théophile ROUSSEL (1816-1903) physician, philanthropist and politician, promoter of child welfare. 4 L.A.S., 1841-1842, to the director of the magazine L'Artiste [Achille Ricourt?]; 8 pages in-8. The letters are written from Turin, Milan, Venice and Livorno, during his trip to Italy, from where he sends "letters" to be published in L'Artiste. In Turin, he was to meet Silvio Pellico and see the Marquis d'Azeglio, director of the Fine Arts Museum, and M. Biscarra, director of the Albertine Academy, who were subscribers to L'Artiste and complained about the irregularity of the mailings. He sent two letters from Turin, where he spent a month: "I regret having given so much space to architecture and hospitals; in future, I will be more sober". He has so much to see and describe that he authorizes the director to shorten and correct his text; he will try to limit himself to the "picturesque". From Livorno, "a boring city", he had to leave for Rome, and was surprised not to have found L'Artiste in Florence: "one of the heads of the company, to which M. Alex. Dumas is attached to, for the illustration of the Galerie degli Uffizii, asked me to speak or speak myself about their publication: on the other hand, I asked him to do the amateurs of his country the service of being able to read L'Artiste"...
