L.A.S., Paris September 11, 1871, to a newspaper editor friend (2 p. in-8 mourning), sending an article on the reorganization of the magistracy: "You guessed right: two hours after my arrival at Place Beauvau, I was dealing with the indemnity of the national guard. I tried, I groped, I had little success, and yet I was told that, during my 20 days of administration (thanks to many circumstances, including my two successive regulations), the daily allowance had fallen from 600,000 fr to 400,00 fr [...] In my life, I have never felt more keenly the desire and disgust of authority than during those 20 days"... Henri ROCHEFORT (1830-1913). L.A.S., June 23, 1880, to journalist Edmond Magnier (2 p. in-8, split), thanking him for "the charming article" he devoted to him. "It is just at the moment when I may (I say may) be returning to France that you are making me feel the sweetness of exile, for the sympathies I am receiving are out of all proportion to the suffering I have been able to endure"...
