Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (1606-1669) The Little Lion Hunt. About 1629. Etching. 118 x 156. Bartsch, Hollstein 116; New Hollstein 29. Very fine and rare proof on thin beige laid paper (watermark: double-headed eagle, close to Hinterding ref. A.a., p. 88), richly inked, the wiping marks and vertical scratches very visible, trimmed on the plate cut, the rounded corners very visible on the left. On verso, minor thinning, formerly and skilfully restored, tiny stains and foxing. "Given the strong diagonal construction of this composition, it is not that surprising that Rubens was once thought to have been the inspiration for it but [...] the scene was mainly inspired by the prints of Antonio Tempesta: the exact same fallen horse even appears in one of his etchings." (E. Hinterding, Rembrandt Etchings from the Frits Lugt Collection, vol. I, Busum, THOTH Publishers, Paris, Fondation Custodia, 2008, p. 246).
