Georges Ferdinand Bigot (1860-1927), two watercolor drawings, colonials in Indochina, late 19th century Graphite, colored pencil and watercolor on paper. - The first shows a French colonial dignitary in Indochina, wearing a monocle and carrying a cigar. He is accompanied by a native sheltering him under a parasol. In the background, an Annamite skirmisher in uniform and a crowd near a pavilion. Signed lower right in Latin letters G. Bigot and in Japanese 美好画 ("drawn by Bigot"). 27.2 x 20.5 cm ; - on the second, a British officer in profile, red jacket and spiked colonial helmet, stick under arm, large mustache and pipe in mouth. In the background, Indochinese in traditional costume go about their business. Signed lower left in Latin letters G. Bigot and in Japanese 美好画 ("drawn by Bigot"). 28.4 x 20 cm (stains). Georges Ferdinand Bigot lived in Indochina, and Vietnam to be precise, from 1885 to 1898. He spent several years in the region, documenting Vietnamese life and culture through his illustrations and caricatures. This was a period when Indochina was under French colonial control, and Bigot witnessed and depicted many aspects of Vietnamese society at the time in his artwork.
