Large Chinese white porcelain Guanyin, China, Dehua, 18th ce - Lot 30
Large Chinese white porcelain Guanyin, China, Dehua, 18th century Depicted seated holding a child, right leg bent and left leg dangling in a position known as vāmārdhaparyaṅka. A lustral water bottle to her right rests on one side of her throne, a scroll and sutra books to her left. At his feet, his two acolytes LongNü, holding the Pearl of Light and ShanCai TonZi, hands in adoration. Between them, on a terrace, a lotus flower surrounded by two facing dragons. Height: 36.3 cm Minor accidents. ShanCai TongZi, 善財童子, "the child of wealth" and LongNü, 龍女, "the dragon's daughter", appear in Buddhist and Taoist folk tales as servants of GuanYin, 觀音菩薩. Their depiction was probably influenced by that of the "Jade Lady", 玉女, and that of the "Golden Child", 金僮, both of which appear in the iconography of the "Jade Emperor", 玉皇大帝.
