Attributed to Pieter CLAEISSENS le Vieux (1500 - 1576) and NORTHERN DUTCH SCHOOL circa 1550 Crucifixion triptych with donors Three oak panels, curved at the top, inserted in a single mount Central panel 53 x 40 cm Side panels 51 x 15.5 cm The central panel bears a red number on the reverse, "n° 215" and an illegible inscription in black ink. (Old restorations) The altarpiece was painted by two artists. The central section, the Crucifixion between St. John and the Virgin, was painted by a Bruges artist around 1550, inspired by the models of Adriaen Isenbrant and Ambrosius Benson. The landscape, with its idealized view of Jerusalem, features both contemporary and imaginary architecture. The side shutters have been transferred to the central panel. The donors are depicted accompanied by their respective patron saints: St. John the Baptist and St. Margaret of Antioch. The composition of these four figures is reminiscent of artists active in Amsterdam and Haarlem, such as Maaerten van Heemskerk and Dirck Jacobzs.
