Knowing for a long time how interested you are in the art of music and how much you love musical archaeology and the frank, naive melodies of the past, I take the liberty of addressing you Monsieur Michaëlis, who has undertaken a project entitled : Chefs-d'œuvre classiques de l'Opéra Français, a faithful and completely authentic reconstitution of works from the 17th and 18th centuries; most of these works, little known today, existed only in the state of arrangements and adaptations made without respect for the original text. Mr. Michaëlis has set himself the goal of reviving these monuments in their original purity and naivety, bringing to light admirable works by Campra, Rameau and Destouches, which until now have been almost totally ignored by amateurs and even artists. D'Indy himself undertook the reconstitution of Destouches' Éléments, a score which contains passages of sublime poetry and truth of expression... Paris April 17, 1889. He sends two recently published choruses for female voice with solo, asking his correspondent to sponsor these little works in Bordeaux, a city I know to be extremely musical and in which I have never had the pleasure of seeing myself performed ...
