Three landscape paintings in the sansui style (山水), attributed to Zhao Zuo - 趙左, ca. 1570-1633
Ink on paper depicting landscapes of mountains surrounded by pine and other trees, as well as stretches of water dotted with small dwellings. Each painting is accompanied by a poem and commentary and is signed with a Zuo - 左 seal. - The first painting is illustrated with an extract from a poem by Du Fu (712-770): 'Two poems passing through the estate of the late clerk Husi' - 過故斛斯校書莊二首 - Guo Gu Hu Si Jiao Shu Zhuang Er Shou. It reads: "No plank is restored on the broken bridge, a willow tree, lying flat, still grows branches" - 斷橋無覆板,楊柳自生枝。- Duan qiao wu fu ban, yang liu zi sheng zhi. Follows commentary: 'done in the style of Dong Qi's brush'- 仿董其筆意 - Fang Dong Qi bi yi. Dong Qi is probably an abbreviation of the name of the painter Dong Qichang* - 董其昌 (1555-1636). - The second painting is illustrated with an extract from a poem by Tang Yin (1470-1524): "Eight of the twenty-four paintings"- 题画廿四首其八 - Ti hua nian si shou qi ba. It can be read as follows: "The shade of the green trees is painted peacefully and the gibbons shout, / Next to the San xia bridge, the paths cross, / The pretty sound of the spring, guides us the way back, / The sound of the spring sobs, the path sometimes high, sometimes low." - 綠陰清畫白猿啼,三峽橋邊路欲迷。 賴得泉聲引歸路,泉聲鳴咽路高低。- Lu yin qing hua bai yuan ti, / San xia qiao bian lu yu mi. / Lai de quan sheng yin gui lu, / Quan sheng wu ye lu gao di. The commentary follows: "done in the style of Dong Beiyuan "* - 仿董北苑意 - Fang dong bei yuan yi. - The third painting is accompanied by an extract from a poem by Du Fu (712-770): "At a party hosted by Wang of Langzhou, I respectfully respond to Eleventh composition by my maternal uncle on regret of separation" - 王閬州筵奉酬十一舅惜別之作 - Wang Lang zhou yan feng chou shi yi jiu xi bie zhi zuo. It can be read as follows: "Ten thousand ravines are filled with the sound of trees, / On a thousand cliffs the autumn air is bracing" - 萬壑樹聲滿,千崖秋氣高。- Wan he shu sheng man, / Qian ya qiu qi gao. Follows commentary: "done in the style of Jing Hao*" - 仿荊浩意 - Fang Jing Hao yi. Sheet size: 23 x 34 cm
*Dong Qichang, brush name Xuanzai, was a contemporary Ming painter and friend of Zhao Zuo. *Dong Yuan (or Tong Yuan or Tung Yüan, nickname: Shuda, brush name: Beiyuan), born around 934 in Zhongling (today Nanjing), died in 962, was a Chinese painter active in the Southern Tang dynasty (937-975). He is considered the father of the Southern School of Chinese painting. *Jing Hao (ching Hao or King Hao, nickname: Haoran, brush name: Hongguzi) was an artist active in the late 9th and first half of the 10th centuries. He seems to have had a major influence on the development of landscape painting.
