The Boxer Rebellion took place in China, essentially from 1899 to 1901. The conflict arose from China's opposition to foreign influences in the country, both Western and Japanese. The movement was put down by a coalition, the Alliance of Eight Nations (Austro-Hungarian Empire, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, United Kingdom, United States of America), which further weakened the Chinese government already shaken by the Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895).
