Paolo CALIARI, known as VERONÈSE (Verona 1528 - Venice 1588) Study of a full-length nude woman Pen, brown ink and bistre wash. (Cut-out sheet, partial sketch top left and back). 8.5 x 4.5 cm We would like to thank Xavier Salomon for confirming the authenticity of this drawing after a visual examination. This small, unpublished study was most probably cut from a sheet filled with similar sketches, as Veronese was wont to do during his research work (see : R. Cocke, Veronese's Drawings, a Catalogue Raisonne, London, 1984, Sotheby's Publications, no. 11 or no. 52 among others, reproduced). Our sketch, quickly drawn with suppleness and vivacity, is close in subject and execution to the figurines that swarm in the sheet of studies in the former Oppé collection. Several of these sketches reproduce poses from sculptures in the Belvedere collection in the Vatican, and it is likely that Veronese was inspired by engravings. On the same sheet, studies prepare for a fresco composition detached from the Palazzo Trevisano, now in the Louvre, and dating from the second half of the 1550s.
