Paul-Jean TOULET (1867-1920). L.A.S. "pjean", [ca. 1916], to his "dear friend" [Mauricia Chaline]; 3 1/2 pages on 3 illustrated postcards (views of Avignon), in purple pencil. Long letter of material recommendations to his cousin Mauricia Chaline, while he was convalescing and undergoing a cure in Avignon (Mauricia was his great purveyor of alcohol, tobacco and laudanum, and often helped him financially): check the buttons on a suit; pay attention to a work of art: "I hope you've closed my Caran d'Ache dog. It's quite a rare thing"; put away and lock in the wardrobe or cajibi the box containing his correspondence, as well as his "Japanese tie box and the little morocco box", etc. Above all, he advises her to lock everything, "then put all the keys, cupboard, cajibi, etc. in the key drawer, close the secretary, and keep the key in your pocket". The powder room needs to be repainted and "waxed with walnut stain (you don't have to do it yourself)", etc. He then talks about his future wife Marie Vergon, who has been invited by the Doctor to spend 3 or 4 weeks here: "Meals at the villa, and a room in a modest but appropriate house, in the home of an old haberdasher formerly placed in a good family". He sent her the price of the trip in second class, but Marie hesitated and he begged Mauricia to insist and convince her to come and join him: "I'd like her to come and look after me a bit"... On the front of one of the cards, in ink, he added: "I took a cold at N.D. des Doms but it's getting better. I still despise alcohol. But I'm having trouble, since the trip, putting the lauda back within its proper limits. You can see that I need a sick nurse". Attached is a L.A.S., Guéthary August 30, 1918, condolences to a lady who has just lost her son in battle; - and 2 autograph notes (4pages in-12 in pencil), advice on buying books and reading (A. de Noailles, Fromentin, Nerval, Maupassant, Schwob, Giraudoux, Laforgue, Jammes, etc.).
