Dark brown jansenist morocco, ribbed spine, framed in the same morocco on the inside, decorated at the center of each side with a wavy gilt fillet crossing a large rectangle with inwardly curved ends, gray moiré silk lining and endpapers, double endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, cover and spine preserved, lined slipcase (L. Lévêque). Illustrated first edition, printed in an edition of 390 copies, comprising 261 compositions in black by Pierre BONNARD (1867-1947), including 29 original lithographs hors texte, 178 woodcuts in the text, 17 original etchings hors texte, including 3 for the table of etchings and lithographs, and a suite of 37 unused woodcuts on 15 leaves. The lithographs and etchings were printed on laid paper. One of 257 numbered copies on Arches vellum. A fine copy bound by Louise Lévêque. Minor damage to two nerves. A few scattered brown spots.
