Inscribed on reverse "13 1903 . G . Morland Mare and Fox / jan 7 1792 / sale of JH Long dec ."; bears a label on the reverse of the frame "George Morland (1763-1804) " Mare and Foal" replica or after the painting of the same subject in the collection of Mr. John Fleming, London. According to the inscription on the panel of the present painting, it was sold at the J. H. Long sale on March 15, 1905 as an original work by G. Morland.
