Leonetto CAPPIELLO (1875-1942)
The Marquisette, 1901
Mixed media and laid in tiles. Mounted on canvas.
Signed lower left.
(Layering, tears, stains, rubbing and pencil marks).
145.5 x 114 cm

Bibliography :
Rennert, no. 19, p. 50 for a 200 x 97 cm format; a poster in our format preserved at the BNF and dated 1904.

It's summer - the table is made of bamboo! - two naughty young ladies in chains happily discover this dessert liqueur, which suggests that it won't be their last drink!
Rennert describes an elongated format (Rennert, p. 50, no. 19) of 96.9 x 200 dated 1901. It was probably printed at the same time as ours, in the format most common at the time: the BNF holds a copy dated 1904, which suggests that, given its success, it was a reprint!
