HEBREW BIBLE - 16th century - Lot 10
HEBREW BIBLE - 16th century Hamisha Humshe Torah חמשה חומשי תורה [Pentateuch with the five Megiloth], Antwerp (Christophe Plantin, 1566). General title in xylographed architectural border. 148 ff. (foliotation in Hebrew). Binding. 17th, In-8, full beige morocco very richly decorated (roulettes, fillets, fleurons, semis), smooth mute spine with coffers and fleurons, gilt edges and guilloche on head and tail (Vinograd, Antwerp 7). Two printed bookplates (vicomtesse de Fontenay andCBMHI (Henri Joliet) with the motto "Plus penser que dire"). Bound with a two-column Greek New Testament, 16th century, title-piece missing, probably also from Plantin in Antwerp. Sixteenth-century Hebrew Bible, finely printed by Christophe Plantin, with superb binding and spectacular gilding. Plantin was, after Daniel Bomberg, the most outstanding Christian printer of Hebrew books in the 16th century. By 1576, he was operating 22 presses and was Northern Europe's leading printer-publisher. His greatest publishing success was the eight-volume "Antwerp Polyglot" (1568-72).
