16th century HEBREW BIBLE (MIKRAOT GEDOLOT) - DEVAUCHELLE - Lot 11
16th century HEBREW BIBLE (MIKRAOT GEDOLOT) - DEVAUCHELLE
Neviim Rishonim: Joshua, Judges, Samuel, Kings. Venice, Bomberg, 1525.
Followed by [Neviim aharonim]: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and the Twelve Minor Prophets. Venice, Bomberg, 1546.
Two volumes in folio, modern binding in full cold-stamped calf on wooden boards, cloth-covered slipcases. This exceptional copy, presented in superb condition in terms of binding and interior (washed copy), its spastic binding being a real tour de force by master bookbinder Devauchelle, one of the most important French bookbinders of the 20th century and author of an essential history of bookbinding, brings together two volumes, the first from 1525, the second from 1546. They come from two editions of the Hebrew Bible given in Venice by the famous printer-publisher Daniel Bomberg, a non-Jewish man from Antwerp who became one of the most illustrious publishers of Hebrew books of all time. The first volume retains its beautiful woodcut frontispiece, typical of the finest prints of the Italian Renaissance (it is absent from the second volume).
