XVIth ENGRAVED WOODS - HEBREW COMMENTARY - Lot 14
XVIth ENGRAVED WOODS - HEBREW COMMENTARY Sefer Biurim (ביאורים), super-commentary on Rashi's commentary on the Torah, by R. Nathan Shapiro of Horodna. Venice, Matteo Zanetti and Comino Presegno, [1593]. Contains several engraved illustrations: map of the Holy Land, Jacob's scale, Temple menorah, etc. 180 f. 19 cm. Bound in full dark calf, inside tired, partially unbound, some pages lacking paper. Although this work is attributed on the title page (and throughout the book) to Nathan Shapiro, it is in fact a forgery. Nathan's original super-commentary on Rashi's Torah commentary was published at the same time, by his son Isaac, under the title Imre Shefer (Krakow and Lublin, 1590-1597). In his preface to the Imre Shefer treatise, Isaac Shapiro declared Sefer Biurim to be a forgery. The book was subsequently banned by Poland's rabbis.
