COMTAT VENAISSIN - RABBINISM - Lot 20
COMTAT VENAISSIN - RABBINISM Mardochée Crémieu, Maamar Mordekhaï, Livorno, Gio. Vicenzo Falorni, 1784. In-4, half binding ép. Rare copy of the commentary on the Shulkhan Arukh by Mardochée Crémieu (1750-1825), one of Carpentras' most famous rabbis, which he had printed in Livorno due to the absence of Hebrew presses in the Comtat. The book is preceded by an imprimatur in Italian granted to "l'excellentissime rabbin Mordohai Carmi di Carpantras". Includes the corrected proof (by the author?) of pp. קד to קז as well as 4 fragments. Mardochée Crémieu, a member of a dynasty of Comtat rabbis, was one of the first French rabbis to advocate the teaching of secular subjects, notably French and Latin, in rabbinic training.
