HEBREW- RENAISSANCE - MUNSTER Sebastiano Munster. Dictionarium Hebraicum, ultimo ab autore Sebastiano Munstero recognitum, et ex Rabinis praesertim ex radicibus David Kimhi auctum et locupletatum. Basel, Jérôme Froben and Nicolas Episcopius, February 1564. In-8, contemporary full marbled tan calf, mute ribbed spine, small gilt fleurons, boards decorated with a large gilt Renaissance fleuron in the center within a double frame of double cold fillets, gilt stylized fleur-de-lys in spandrels, 496 ff. recto-verso. Top and bottom of spine restored with presence of existing front cover, minor wear to three corners, interior in good condition. A fine copy of one of the posthumous editions of Munster's Hebrew Dictionary. Sebastian Munster (1488-1552) was originally a Franciscan, teaching in his order's convent in Heidelberg from 1521 to 1529, where he produced a Hebrew dictionary, a Hebrew grammar, an Aramaic grammar and various biblical translations. He left religious life in 1529 and began teaching in Basel, where he had his numerous works printed by the Froben family.
