SAUVAGE (Sylvain) - D'ANNUNZIO (Gabriele).
Triumph of death. Translation by G. Hérelle.
Paris : G. & A. Mornay, 1923 - In-8, 237 x 185: (4 ff. first blank), 444 pp, (3 ff.), illustrated cover. Black box, wide horizontal band of red box surrounded by white box in the center of the spine, partly overhanging the boards, finished at the ends with a vertical bold gilt fillet, smooth spine, framed by a listel of red and white box inside, wood paper lining and endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, cover and spine preserved, lined slipcase (Madeleine Gras).

Edition of 1,075 copies, illustrated with 140 wood-engraved figures by Sylvain SAUVAGE (1888-1948), including one on the cover, a frontispiece, 6 full-page illustrations, 44 bandeaux, 44 lettrines and 44 culs-de-lampe.

ONE OF 13 EXEMPLIES ON CHINESE PAPER, this one among 6 hors commerce, specially printed for Valère Bachmann, son-in-law of Georges Mornay (1876-1935), founder of Mornay Editions, who sold his business to him in 1935.

It is enriched by a suite, perhaps the only one of its kind, of illustrations on japon pelure, with almost every proof annotated in pencil. These are obviously trial proofs, and the first two plates, containing the various initials, have been cut out.

A fine copy in a sober but perfect contemporary or slightly later binding by Madeleine Gras (1891-1958).
Numerous traces of rubbing to spine. A few scattered freckles.
