Dates, inventory numbers, annotations in Polish and photographers' stamps on versos. In the post-war period, Warsaw, 85% of whose buildings had been destroyed, was a vast construction site. The reconstruction of the city was coordinated by the Capital Reconstruction Office (BOS), founded in 1945. Under the slogan "The whole nation builds its capital", 0.5% of every taxpayer's income is earmarked for the project. Photographs by the greatest photographers of the time, such as Edward Hartwig, Leonard Sempoliński and Andrzej Millak, serve Communist propaganda by documenting the enthusiasm of the workers and showing the power of the collective.
