Hans Severus ZIEGLER (1893-1978). Entartete Musik. Eine Abrechnung (Düsseldorf, Völkischer Verlag, [1938]); 32p. in-8 booklet, illustrated cover (slight crease mark at one corner).
Very rare Nazi propaganda pamphlet against degenerate music.
May 1938 saw the opening of the Entartete Musik (Degenerate Music) exhibition at the Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf, organized by Staatsrat Hans Severus Ziegler (1893-1978), General Director of the German State Theater in Weimar, and subsequently presented in Weimar, Munich and Vienna. Modern music, such as that of Gustav Mahler or Arnold Schönberg, was described as "degenerate", as was the music of Jewish artists, or jazz. On the occasion of the inauguration, Ziegler gave a speech, which is reproduced in this booklet, subtitled Eine Abrechnung (Settlement of accounts), and preceded by a quotation from Mein Kampf. In it, he denounced the fact that music had fallen into the hands of Jews, blacks and Bolsheviks.
The cover, designed by Ludwig Tersch, depicts a black jazz saxophonist wearing a Star of David on his suit. The brochure's photographic illustrations show Jewish or enjuivé musicians (Hindemith, Klemperer, Krenek, Schönberg, Schreker, Webern, Weill...).
