Joseph Léopold HUGO (1773-1828) general, father of Victor. L.A.S., Blois April 9, 1820, to General Foy; 3 1/2 pages in-4, addressed.
Very interesting letter, setting the record straight after an article in Le Conservateur, which might "make him suspect of leaving my children and their mother in need". He recalls that while he was in Corsica and on the island of Elba, he gave "alone the most affectionate care to my very young neglected children"; that for the duration of his marriage to Miss Trébuchet, he was the sole provider for the household. While in Madrid, he obtained for his eldest son a place at the page school, then a sub-lieutenancy in the Spanish army; from the battlefield of Cifuentes, he obtained entry for his two younger sons to the Royal College of San Antonio; back in France, he put his children through college at his own expense, and wanted them to attend university; at their request, he took them out of boarding school to study law, and regularly sends his eldest son Abel the funds to support his brothers and their mother. He gives details of the sums dissipated by Sophie Trébuchet, whom he reproaches for "having given her political opinions to her children", who interrupt their studies to "make a newspaper said to be ultra"...

Includes 4 photographic portraits of Victor Hugo and an engraved portrait.
