Saint bishop in carved limestone, rough back. Seated, he is - Lot 2
Saint bishop in carved limestone, rough back. Seated, he is wearing a miter, an alb with vertically drooping folds and a chapel held in place by a pectoral clasp, one side of which falls to his knees; handsome, gentle face with fine features, wide-set eyes, small, closed mouth. Burgundy, last third of the 15th century H.80cm (visible accidents and missing parts) This sculpture is striking in that the holy bishop is beardless. No hair or eyebrows have been carved. Another Burgundian sculptor, Jean de la Huerta, also depicted beardless prelates and saints, like the one in the Rolin Museum in Autun (inv M.L.1305). The sculptor is undoubtedly a follower of the Burgundian imagier, who, without having the talent to render the expressiveness of the characters, is nonetheless capable of mastering the softness of the features.
