Henri de TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (1864-1901) - Lot 205
Henri de TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (1864-1901) The Chap Book, 1895-96 Chromolithography. Imp. Chaix, Atelier Chéret, 20 rue Bergère, Paris. Affiches artistiques de La Plume, Paris. Framed. Some foxing. Insolate. 39.5 x 58 cm Another variant, this time without the calendar! Exhibition: - Bistrot ! De Baudelaire à Picasso, Galerie Documents, Paris, no. 108 (label on back of mount). - Birmingham (shipping label on back of mount). - Toulouse-Lautrec and the French imprint, Janes Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum, exhibition April 2006 - February 2007 (label on back of mount). Bibliography: Wittrock, p. 18, no. 790. Printed by Chaix, commissioned by The Chap Book, Chicago, distributed by La Plume, Paris. A fine copy of the cast in full display. In fact, this is what we now call a "poster". The poster was never used to advertise the Chap Book in America! Instead, it was sold to collectors by La Plume: in effect, the Chap Book was doing what is known in advertising today as "branding", and Deschamps was enriching his catalog.
