Magnificent collection of 72 engraved intaglio vignettes (77 x 45 mm) with captions, mounted on 4 sheets of colored card. They depict extravagant hairstyles and hats typical of late 18th-century fashion, with the most surprising names: Pouf à l'Amériquaine, Chapeau à la Théodore en cloche, Pouf à la Colinette, Demibonnet à l'Éventail Chinois, etc.
They are taken from or inspired by Gallerie des Modes et Costumes Français, one of the first fashion periodicals, published from 1778 to 1788.
A superb copy from the collection of Sir David Lionel Goldsmid-Stern-Salomons (1851-1925), with his large armorial bookplate on the front flyleaf.
A British justice of the peace and inventor, Sir David Salomons developed a passion for electricity at an early age, equipping his house at Broomhill, north of Tunbridge Wells, with numerous inventions: electric lighting powered by a coal-fired generator, cooking appliances, alarms and more. Equally passionate about watchmaking, he had amassed an incomparable collection of Breguet timepieces, some of which he bequeathed to the Mayer Institute in Jerusalem. His rich library was dispersed in New York in 1930 and in London in 1986. This copy was probably bound for him by Rivière, one of London's finest bookbinders.
Discharges on endpapers.
