- In-8, 189 x 120: xlviij, 218 pp, (3 ff.). Stiff ivory parchment, ornate smooth spine, red edges (late 19th century binding). Rare first edition of the first French treatise on fabric decoration, dedicated to M. de Fréminville, treasurer-general of the Hôtel des Invalides. It was written by Nicolas Joubert de l'Hiberderie (1715-1770), designer for the Pernon factory in Lyon. Opening with an introduction giving interesting historical details on Lyonnais cloth designers, the work is divided into two parts, preceded by an epistle bearing Fréminville's engraved arms at the head. The first part offers advice for each type of fabric: satins, damasks, droguets, taffetas, gold and silver fabrics, velvets, etc. It is illustrated with 5 full-page woodcuts, some with floral elements enhanced with color. The second part includes a translation of the six tables of Orlandi's ABC of Painting (1660-1727). Copy enriched with 3 18th-century intaglio figures, re-engraved, on the theme of weaving and sewing. Designed and engraved by Louis BINET, they come from the 1780-1785 edition of Rétif de La Bretonne's Contemporaines. Soiling to binding. Heavy staining to first and last leaves, small wormholes to added engravings. Provenance: Charles Avezac Lavigne (19th century), with handwritten bookplate. - Jacques Renout (1903-1972), Franco-Brazilian bibliophile, with bookplate designed by the painter Tancrède Synave.
