Paris, 1761. - In-12, 156 x 96 : 48 pp. Black morocco, plexiglass front cover sheathed in black morocco, smooth spine, silver tears at corners of lower cover (Boichot).
Edmond de Goncourt, La Maison d'un artiste, 1881, I, pp. 324-325.
A rare first edition of this satirical oration.
This little piece mocking the glory of the tailor Scheling can only be found in a few well-chosen libraries, including those of the Duc de La Vallière, Aimé-Martin and the Goncourts. The work is mentioned in La Maison d'un artiste: "A little pamphlet, a charming irony, mourning the tailor who first discovered the golden hue, who had the genius to amber clothes, who was the inventor of these charming negligees, called by the people chenilles ; the artist whose vogue was for a time such that his hotel was besieged like a ministry, and every well-born Frenchman 'believed himself to be in the most dreadful nudity, when he was not dressed by the divine Scheling'" (Edmond de Goncourt).
The title and all pages are framed in double black fillet.
A fine copy in a modern mourning binding.
