Jean COCTEAU (1889-1963)
Autograph poem signed, Phénixologie. Poem-preface anamorphoses, [late 1959]; 1 1/2 pages in-8 on Santo-Sospir letterhead (crossed out).
Beautiful poem dedicated "to Lucien Clergue, excellent photographer". It was published as the frontispiece to Testament d'Orphée (Éd. du Rocher, 1961).
Clearly a first draft, it contains erasures and corrections. It comprises 2 quatrains and a quintain; the last stanza, heavily crossed out, has been redone on the verso. The poem alludes to the filming of Testament d'Orphée.
"How far does this taciturn dream want to go
Where the world itself was poorly disguised [...]
I limp towards the call of the Val d'Enfer des Baux
And I adorn through the holes of its funereal sponge
A night attentive to the choice of my tombs."

Attached is a photocopy of the short poem La naissance de Vénus, dedicated to Lucien Clergue and inscribed at the head of La Lune en rodage.
CCC p. 72-73. Œuvre poétiques complètes (Pléiade), p. 1249.

Lots 24 to 68 are sold by provisional auction with the option of reunion.
