[DADLEY (J.)]. The Costume of the Russian Empire. London: S. Gosnell for W. Miller, 1803. - In-folio, 365 x 263 : (82 ff.), 73 plates. Brown calf, gilt roulette and fillets framing the boards, ornate ribbed spine, gilt edges (modern binding with original boards and spine mounted). An original French-English edition forming part of the costume collection published by Miller. Dedicated to Charles Hatchett, it includes 73 plates engraved in dotted colors by J. Dadley, introducing the many nations of the Russian Empire in the early 19th century. " The authenticity of this work can hardly be doubted, as the plates it contains were faithfully copied from those in the collection begun in Petersburg in 1776, and completed in 1779, by C. W. Müller at his own expense, in accordance with the wishes of Empress Catherine II, who accepted the dedication. In the work [...] we have followed exactly the plan of the original. Thus, the first twenty plates describe the nations that trace their origins to the Finns. In the following twenty-two plates, the various Tartar hordes subject to Russia are described. The Forty-third Plate, and the following ones, up to and including the Fifty-ninth, relate to the various tribes of Samoyeds, and to those inhabiting the easternmost part of Siberia, and the islands of the Eastern Ocean. La Planche Soixantième, et les suivantes, comprennent les Kalmoucks, les Mongoles, et quelques autres tribus moins considérables" (Preface). Exemplaire en reliure moderne, avec les plats, le dos et les gardes d'origine rapportés avec leurs défauts restaurés (épidermures, manques, etc.). Rousseurs éparses. Transfer of engravings to facing leaves. Provenance: bookplate depicting a forearm holding a torch, surmounted by the divise "Dux mihi Deus".
