An old lukwakongo masquette for a Bwami initiate, with a classic shape and numerous holes for a luzelu beard that has since disappeared. Lukwakongo masks such as this one are "one of the most important insignia of an initiate of the higher penultimate grade, lutumbo lwa yananio". Most masks are carved from the wood of a tree called muntonko (Alstonia).
