VERNE, Jules. Mathias Sandorf. Published in Paris by J. Hetzel in 1885. In-4, cartonnage "à la bannière", first cover in black and silver gold, beveled edges (Lenègre). 552 pp. Spine slightly lightened, headbands weakened. First edition illustrated with 111 drawings by Benett and a map of the Mediterranean. Originally serialized in "Le Temps" from June to September 1885, this first edition is dedicated posthumously to Alexandre Dumas. In this novel, Verne pays homage to "The Count of Monte Cristo", using it as inspiration for Sandorf's main character. A fine copy, with fresh boards and no freckling.
