Dark green half-chagrin edged with double cold fillet, spines with cold-framed faux-nerfs, gilt title and tomaison, gilt date at foot. Contemporary binding. XLIV and 902 pp. + 23 pp. and IV ; XIV and from 906 to 2135 pp. Volume 1: 51 hors texte plates by Bracquemond, Popelin, Lalanne, Parent, Violet le Duc, Daubigny, Fichot, 16 double plates (plan of the main theaters in Paris), three plans of the Louvre Museum and 1 plan of the Musée des Thermes and Hôtel de Cluny; Volume 2: 60 hors texte plates by Daumier, Rosa Bonheur, Cham, Rops, Henri Monnier, Cham, Delaunay, Lalanne, Morin etc., 3 plans and 4 folding maps, including 1 large color plan of Paris (86 x 58 cm) by Victor Clérot. Spine very slightly sunned, minor rubbing and scuffing to boards, corners worn. Some foxing. Monumental work published on the occasion of the 1867 Paris World's Fair by the greatest writers and artists of the time, foremost among whom was Victor Hugo, who wrote the introduction. The first part, entitled "Science and Art", is in its second edition, while the second part, entitled "Life", is in its original edition. The first part contains autographs of the various contributors: Victor Hugo, Louis Blanc, Eugène Pelletan, Edouard Fournier, Ernest Renan, Sainte-Beuve, Berthelot, Littré, Richelet, Théophile Gautier, Amb.
