5 volumes in-4, red half-chagrin, spine ribbed with gold fillet, cold and double gilt fillets on the entrenerfs, titling and tomaison in gilt letters, speckled edges. Contemporary binding.
480 ; 504 ; 456 ; 480 ; 504 pages, 107 engraved plates in color (including 4 in the frontispiece of volumes 1 to 4), 306 black and white engravings hors-texte, numerous black and white engravings in the text, as well as a map of Paris and its monuments engraved in color on a large folding plate (60x50cm) in-fine of volume 5. Text on two columns.
Some rubbing to leather, nerves and headpieces, some boards slightly scratched. Some foxing, mainly in the margins, 2 loose leaves in volume 1 (plates N°11 and 15).
First edition, complete in 5 volumes published between 1879 and 1882, of this monumental history of Paris and Parisians through the centuries, from the foundation of Lutetia to the end of the 19th century. It is the work of French historian, novelist and heraldist Henri Gourdon, known as Gourdon de Genouillac (1826-1898). The text is accompanied by an abundant iconography comprising 107 superb color plates engraved hors-texte on heavy paper (13 in volume 1; 16 in volume 2; 15 in volume 3; 16 in volume 4 and 47 in volume 5), 306 full-page black & white engravings hors-texte, as well as numerous black & white engravings in the text. Each plate is signed and captioned.
A fine, solid copy of this fascinating history of Paris.
