3 volumes in-4, eggplant half-chagrin with corners edged with gilt fillet, smooth spine decorated with romantic gilt, gilt lettering, combed paper boards. Contemporary binding.
Volume 1: 2 ff. 8 pp. and 63 engravings under serpente (including a frontispiece portrait of Louis-Philippe), each accompanied by a 2pp. notice; Volume 2: 2 ff. and 64 engravings accompanied by a 2 pp. notice; Volume 3: 2 ff. and 73 engravings each accompanied by a 2 pp. notice, 1 f. (placement of engravings). Bands, lettering and endpapers.
Spine faded, rubbed and slightly missing, upper head of volume 3 missing, corners worn and worn. Scattered foxing.
First edition. Superb panorama of French history illustrated with 200 steel engravings reproducing the works conserved in the galleries of the Musée historique de Versailles, which had just been inaugurated in June 1837. Each of the 200 plates is accompanied by a 2-page commentary. Complete work in 3 volumes: Volume One: 412 - 1789; Volume Two: 1789 - 1840; Volume Three: Galeries des Maréchaux - Statues.
A complete and highly decorative set for this fine tribute to French history.
