Léon BLOY (1846-1917). L.A.S., [Asnières] Friday [February 27, 1885], to Joris-Karl Huysmans; 2 pages in-8 in blue pencil (trace of tab).
The first issue of Le Pal is ready for publication, but the printer first asks to be paid. "It's terrible. What's no less terrible is the torture I'm putting you through. I've done prodigious deeds of lowliness to get the money I've stripped from you - and what I've been enduring for the last 15 days is a monster of suffering. Maybe I'll finally get back on my feet, and then... In the meantime, here's what to do. Someone found by Bourget is offering 300 francs of the manuscript you have. We had to give up the lottery for reasons I'll tell you. [This is the original manuscript of Une histoire sans nom that Barbey d'Aurevilly had given to Bloy, who had entrusted it to Huysmans]. Bloy asked Huysmans to take the manuscript to Bourget "very carefully wrapped and tied"... [No. 1 of Le Pal was published on March 4, 1885; the magazine collapsed after the 4th issue].
