It's been a long time since he's been able to see her, "but I've been persecuted by all sorts of accidents and little ailments which, combined with the need to finish my paintings, have made it almost impossible for me to go out into the world. I have not forgotten your kind desire to see my paintings before I send them to the exhibition"; he will "probably only be able to keep them until Monday". He asks his correspondent to choose a day with Mme Villot and to let her know, "because, without this precaution, I would run the risk of missing such a precious opportunity by the obligation in which I am, to interrupt my work from time to time to go to the exhibition premises"... [Miniaturist Jeanne-Mathilde Herbelin (1818-1904) came on Tuesday April 12 with Mme Villot to see the paintings; she admired Les Pèlerins d'Emmaüs, which she acquired].
